Approach

I am a friendly and down to earth therapist. The therapy process can be daunting and anxiety provoking in itself. I will take the time to explain it in detail and make it clear and relaxed, adapting it to your pace and preferences. Working with me will in fact be a partnership; whilst I may know a thing or two about the human mind, my clients are experts in how their mind works!

Therapy sessions are focused on making sense of problems in the context of your life experiences. This is done in a variety of ways, which generally include supporting people in better understanding the links between what and how we think, the emotional states we find ourselves in at various points in our lives, and our efforts to cope with what life throws at us.

Therapist and client work collaboratively throughout the whole process. The initial phases of therapy usually focus on exploring the development and maintenance processes behind a difficulty, as well as looking at people’s individual strengths. Once we have a good picture, we move on to investigate helpful perspectives and strategies, and clients are supported and encouraged to experiment by trying out new ways of addressing their problems. This is usually followed by a close analysis of any findings, typically leading to a better understanding of yourself.

Experience

I am a highly trained clinical psychologist in specialized therapy approaches for depression, anxiety disorders and psychosis, with over 20 years of clinical experience in mental health, 15 of which within the NHS. I have also accumulated considerable experience in supervision, teaching, research, management, service development and consultancy, working with people from various backgrounds in diverse settings.

Beyond ensuring the highest quality of evidence based psychological interventions, I am particularly interested in promoting research, addressing stigma and changing public perception of mental health. After over a decade working in mental health services in London and the South East, for the last five years I have been working in Clinical Psychology Research for the NHS. In this role I have been developing, delivering and testing cutting edge therapies through randomised controlled trials, alongside internationally renowned researchers, for a variety of mental health difficulties. I have published several peer-reviewed papers, and I am an occasional lecturer for the Universities of Oxford and Brighton.
